City autocomplete
City suggestions at checkout — no typos in the address.
A city typed by hand is where address mistakes come from: typos, abbreviations, a village entered as a town. Here the customer types the first letters and picks the right place from the suggestions, and delivery services immediately find their branches there.
What it does
- Suggests cities and villages under the «City» field at checkout, from a directory loaded into the shop.
- Searches Ukrainian, Russian and English spellings at once, and puts larger places at the top of the list.
- Hands the delivery services the city name in the spelling their own directories use: Nova Poshta, Meest and Ukrposhta immediately offer branches in the chosen city.
- Pre-fills the city when checkout opens, guessing it from the customer's connection; the customer can always pick another one, and the pre-fill can be switched off.
- Suggests cities in the admin area too, when you create an order by hand.
- Lets you set how many letters must be typed before suggestions appear, and limit the directory to the countries you actually ship to.
- Works with any storefront design: no templates need editing.
What you need
- Tick the countries you deliver to and press «Update the city directory» — the download runs in the background and takes a few minutes.
- A working task queue: the directory is loaded by a background task.
- Internet access from the shop's server: the directory is downloaded from the open GeoNames database, and the city behind a customer's connection is looked up through a free third-party service.
What appears in the shop
This is what a shopper sees once it is installed.
- At checkout, a suggestion list appears under the «City» field: the customer types the first letters and picks their city or village. Suggestions plug into the city field of any design — no separate template is needed and nothing has to be edited in the design editor.
Loading the list of towns is now recorded like the shop's other long-running work. If a run breaks off, the shop shows it in Settings → Diagnostics as "Unfinished work" — there was no way to learn about it before. Requires shop version 2.47.0 or newer.
The directory tells you its state
The loading block is now called «Settlement directory», and next to the button it says what is inside: «The directory holds 29,703 settlements, loaded on 04.09.2026». While the directory is empty it says so — and says that city suggestions do not work meanwhile.
Loading starts as soon as you press the button; there is no need to wait for the scheduler any more.
Settings that do not apply are out of the way
The country list belongs to GeoNames only, and the file link to the official codifier only. Both fields used to sit there at all times, and it was unclear which one applied to the chosen directory. Now you see the ones that matter.
The settlement directory is now a choice
The add-on settings now offer a choice: the official Ukrainian codifier (KATOTTG) or GeoNames. The codifier is the default. It is a single file from the ministry site: Ukrainian names of every village, the district and region next to the name, no keys and no third-party services. GeoNames stays for shops that ship beyond Ukraine.
The codifier is stored separately from GeoNames, so the directories never mix: no two «Kyiv» entries, one from each source. Both the storefront suggestion and the city lookup in the panel read the directory you selected.
A village is now shown with where it belongs: «Chotyrboky — Shepetivskyi district, Khmelnytskyi region». Without that you would be choosing blind: «Ivanivka» occurs 119 times in the country. Towns come above settlements, settlements above villages, and places that are gone from the latest revision leave the directory.
After the update, load the directory with the «Update the directory» button in the add-on settings.
The city suggestion shows addresses, not pieces of the directory
Typing «Kyiv» offered city districts, quarters and identical names one after another. Districts and quarters of cities, abandoned and destroyed villages and historical places are no longer shown. This works on an already loaded directory too; there is no need to refresh it.
The region is now shown next to the name, so villages with the same name are no longer confused. The region comes from the directory when it is refreshed.
A village is found by its Ukrainian name
Some villages are stored under a Latin name only — «Чотирбоки» sits there as «Chotyrboky», and the customer could not find their village at all. The typed name is now searched in its Latin spelling as well, using the Ukrainian transliteration standard.
An icon of its own
In the «Plugins» section and in the list of installed items the add-on now shows its own icon instead of an identical box, so you find the one you need at a glance. The icon appears on shops running version 1.30.0 and newer.
